Change in HbA1c methodology at Imperial

Change in HbA1c methodology
A new analyser and method for the measurement of HbA1c in whole blood will be introduced across the blood sciences laboratories of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust from 17 September 2015.

Comparison of the performance of the new instrument Tosoh G8 HLC-723 analyser against the current method has shown a good correlation.

The Tosoh is unable to generate HbA1c results in Hb E variants or cases with an elevated Hb F. In these situations the patient may already be being monitored using alternative methods for assessing glycaemic control such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring. However, if a HbA1c result is required in these rare cases we can send the sample away for testing using an alternative method.
