Transferrin

Transferrin is the main plasma iron transport protein. It is also a negative acute phase reactant.
Clinical Indications

Suspected hereditary haemochromatosis (transferrin saturation)
Suspected iron-deficient anaemia (Ferritin is preferred)
Suspected poisoning with iron-containing compounds
Limited utility to gauge iron status in inflammation - transferrin saturation which relies on transferrin (a negative acute phase reactant) is no more reliable than ferritin (a positive acute phase reactant) when assessing suspected iron-deficient anaemia
